Im Westen nichts Neues ist ein 1928 verfasster Roman von Erich Maria Remarque, der die Schrecken des Ersten Weltkriegs aus der Sicht eines jungen Soldaten schildert. Thomas Schneider, Herausgeber einer neuen Taschenbuchausgabe des Textes und seit 2000 Leiter des Erich Maria Remarque-Friedenszentrums in Osnabrück, bezeichnet den Roman als „perfekt konstruierte,alternierende[…] Abfolge von grausamen, abschreckenden, emotional aufwühlenden mit retardierenden und reflexiven aber auch humoresken Standardsituationen des ,Kriegs‘“.Obwohl Remarque selbst das Buch als unpolitisch bezeichnet hat,ist es als Antikriegsroman zu einem Klassiker der Weltliteratur geworden.

All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues, lit. 'Nothing New in the West') is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front. The novel was first published in November and December 1928 in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung and in book form in late January 1929. The book and its sequel, The Road Back (1930), were among the books banned and burned in Nazi Germany. All Quiet on the Western Front sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first 18 months in print.

You may have heard of this book through its film adaptation, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, and it's written by a veteran of World War 1. It describes the brutality of life, physically and emotionally, during the war, and the many difficulties encountered when returning home, and is a touching and great read.
