I read this book on the suggestion of a friend while living in Morocco. It captures the spirit and desperation of a critical time in North African history, from the perspective of a poor and illiterate young man as he migrates to a new city and learns Arabic. It became a controversial classic in Morocco and the wider world and has inspired discussion ever since its release.
